BOYS-ALERT

A Boys Adulthood-Readiness Programme, empowering boys to mature into responsible men, tackling all forms of* violence against girls and women, proactively

WHAT EXACTLY IS BOYS-ALERT PROGRAMME?

BoysAlert is a life skills and gender-equality programming for boys aged 10 – 25. It’s designed to prevent all forms of violence towards women and girls in Malawi and the SADC region, by adopting an inclusive approach to empowerment, to promote risk avoidance and risk reducing behaviors.

We believe there should be a 5050 split and an equal chance to the empowerment ladder, so we’re here to help at-risk boys on all fronts; grooming, mentoring and skill building, giving them the tools they need to take charge of their lives and grow as responsible citizens, so they thrive in adulthood. We’ve* adopted a preventive approach.

We know there is a lot of work to do in this space. A lot of work has been done particularly from women’s non-profits, but violence against women still persists and remains widespread. It’s mostly men who propagate the violence, hence our focus on boys.

So via Boys*Alert, we’re taking action, making efforts to tackle the violence vice and create safe spaces for boys from home-to-school* and to* respectful adulthood.

The Problem

BoysAlert exists to proactively engage boys, helping them grow into responsible men, teaching them healthy masculinity and how to relate with girls and women.

We know there is a lot that goes on and around a boy-child when growing up because we have been there. Boys, especially from fatherless homes and urban slums are challenged at what it means to be a man, so you are perceived man enough when you do certain things.

Boys from fatherless homes are at greater risk for behavior problems than those who grow up with their fathers. Access to role models to guide and mentor at-risk boys, helps them gain confidence and manage anxiety better than their peers.

Among other things we do, Boys-Alert provides; useful advice, access to empowerment, funding education, mentoring, skills, sports spaces, and sometimes just a friendly shoulder to lean on, learning facilities and other critical resources they need to make their road less bumpy on their journey to developing into boys-leaders, that promote gender equality, and free from behavioral disorders.

  • Frightening statistic. Estimates published by WHO indicate that 1 in 3 (30%) of girls and women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
  • 34% of the women aged 15-49 in Malawi experienced physical violence.
  • 14% of the women experienced sexual violence.
  • 23% of the women experienced emotional violence.
  • Early marriage- 42% of girls are married before age of 18 and 9% before their 15th Early dropping-out of school is common occurrence. Literature indicates that girls at all levels of education are at higher risk of dropping out of school than boys. Teen pregnancy and school dropout have similar root cause including early sexual debut and poverty.
  • Gender based violence itself has effects, such as homicide and suicide. Malawi has recorded a 57% increase in recent years since 2019.
